Is Bark worth it for tradesmen?

Owen O'Callaghan giving a talk at BNI

Yes, Bark can be worth it for a tradesman, but only if the jobs you win bring in more profit than the credits you spent reaching them. Bark is a lead marketplace where customers post a job and trades buy credits to contact them. The standard rate is £1.80 a credit, and each lead costs a different number of credits.

In our view Bark suits a trade with gaps in the diary and a decent margin on each job. It’s a poor fit as the only way the phone rings. Everything about Bark’s prices and rules here comes from its own help pages, pricing page and terms, read on 30 October 2026.

Do this today

  1. Open a free Bark account and set your services, your area and your Filter Questions.
  2. Look at a week of leads without buying any. Note the credit cost of the ones you’d want.
  3. Work out your profit on a typical job. Run the sum further down this page.
  4. Decide your own budget for credits before you buy. Leave Auto top-up off while you test.
  5. Put a reminder in your phone for 3 months after you buy. That’s when the credits run out.

How does Bark work for trades?

A customer answers questions about their job and Bark matches the request to professionals. You read the lead and decide whether to contact them. The account is free. Bark’s pricing page says it sends leads free from sign-up and takes no commission on the job.

You pay when you respond. Credits leave your balance as soon as you confirm. You then get the customer’s name, phone number and email, and Bark tells the customer you’re interested. Follow-up messages are free.

There’s a second way to spend credits. Bark lists a tool called Enquiries, where customers come to you. Bark’s terms say credits come off when the customer messages you, calls you or sends a booking or call-back request. So there, the customer’s action triggers the charge.

Lead preferences decide what you see. You set your services and your area. The area can be a radius, a travel time or a drawn map. Filter Questions narrow it further, for example by budget. Do this before you buy. Bark can decline a return on a lead your settings should have filtered out.

What do Bark credits cost?

Bark credits cost £1.80 each at the standard rate, and bigger packs cost less per credit. Bark’s terms add VAT on top and let Bark change the price. At the 20% standard rate, £1.80 becomes £2.16.

The number of credits per lead changes from lead to lead. The help pages we read don’t give a price list by trade. Bark says the price depends on:

  • Service type. Specialist services usually cost more.
  • Job size. A bigger job costs more than a smaller one.
  • Location. High-demand areas may cost more.
  • Customer engagement. Someone ready to hire may cost more than someone still looking.

The credit cost shows on every lead before you confirm. So a free account is the way to get a real figure for your trade and your towns.

What else changes the bill

  • Expiry. Credits bought from 1 November 2025 last 3 months. Unused ones can’t be refunded. In our view a big pack only saves money if you use it in time.
  • Auto top-up. This optional setting buys more credits when your balance runs low.
  • Subscriptions. Credit Pack Subscriptions deliver credits weekly or monthly. They run for up to 12 months, then payments carry on unless you cancel.

Who else gets the lead?

Up to 5 professionals can respond to each customer on Bark. You can see how many already have before you buy.

Bark also puts signals on leads. “1st to respond” means nobody has contacted the customer yet. “Verified phone” means the number has been checked. “High hiring intent” and “Urgent” tell you how keen the customer is.

Bark says it checks every request for contact details, intent to hire and duplicates. Its terms are plain about the limit: “We do not make any guarantees that you will be successful”. They add that a customer may choose none of the professionals who respond.

What can you get back?

You can get credits back for a bad lead, but not for a lead that simply didn’t turn into work. Money back is limited.

Credit returns on bad leads

Bark’s eligible reasons include a dead phone number or a bouncing email. A misleading request, a bot or a job seeker can count too. A customer who hired someone else doesn’t qualify. Nor does one who never replied or changed the job after speaking to you. All returns are at Bark’s discretion.

Watch the deadline. The help centre says 14 days from buying the lead. The terms, last updated 1 November 2025, say 7 days, and they list fewer grounds. In our view, report any bad lead within 7 days and keep screenshots. That keeps you inside both.

The Get Hired Guarantee

The Get Hired Guarantee covers your first Starter Pack or first app purchase. If you use your credits and don’t get hired, Bark returns credits, once. You must have run out of usable credits, waited 3 days since your last lead and not be marked as hired.

The pricing page says all your credits come back. The help page says it’s the credits you used, and the terms set out their own conditions. Either way you get credits to spend again, not cash.

Money back

Monetary refunds are limited and at Bark’s discretion. A credit pack needs to be completely unused. Bark calls refunds on a Starter Pack very rare.

What reviews of Bark say

Trustpilot, a third-party review site, showed Bark at 3.8 out of 5 from 112,320 reviews on 30 October 2026. In our view a review score won’t tell you what a lead is worth to you. Your own sums will.

Who Bark suits

In our view Bark has the best chance when:

  • You’ve got gaps in the diary and need work soon.
  • You’re new and nobody’s searching for your name yet. Our guide on starting a trade business: how to get customers covers what to build alongside it.
  • One job’s profit covers many leads.
  • You can ring a customer quickly. Bark’s own help pages say speed matters.
  • You can use a pack inside 3 months.

Who it doesn’t suit

In our view Bark is a hard sell when:

  • Your jobs are small and your margin is thin.
  • You’re on the tools all day and can’t reply until the evening.
  • You’d quote against four others and you won’t compete on price.
  • You’re already booked up.
  • Bark is your only source of work. Stop buying credits and you stop reaching those customers.

How to work out if it’s paying for itself

Run this sum before you buy. It tells you how many leads you can afford to lose for each job you win.

  1. Take the credits on a typical lead and multiply by £2.16.
  2. Write down your profit on that kind of job. Profit, not the price you charge.
  3. Divide the profit by the lead cost. That’s your break-even number of leads per job won.

Here’s an example with made-up numbers. They aren’t Bark prices or results. Say a lead costs 10 credits, which is £21.60.

  • With £200 profit a job, you break even winning one job in every 9 leads.
  • With £60 profit a job, you need to win better than one in 3.

In our view one in 3 is a lot to ask of a lead up to 4 others can also answer, and that’s before your time on the phone and on quotes.

Once you’ve spent your first pack, check it against what happened. Count credits spent, including any that expired, and jobs won. Then use the same cost per job won sum we set out in is Checkatrade worth it for tradesmen. If the numbers don’t work, here’s Checkatrade vs MyBuilder vs Bark vs TrustATrader for trades side by side, and Checkatrade alternatives for UK trades.

Questions about Bark for tradesmen

Is Bark free for tradesmen?

Bark is free for tradesmen to join and free to receive leads. You pay in credits when you respond to one.

Do Bark credits expire?

Yes, Bark credits expire 3 months after you buy them, if you bought them from 1 November 2025. Bark won’t refund or extend expired credits.

Can you get a refund on Bark?

You can get a refund on Bark only in limited cases. A completely unused credit pack can qualify. For a bad lead you usually get credits back, not money.

How many tradesmen get the same Bark lead?

Up to 5 tradesmen can respond to the same Bark lead.

Is there a Bark subscription instead of credits?

Yes, for some trades. Bark Marketplace is a subscription, and Bark lists it as going live in the UK for cleaners, end of tenancy cleaners and roof and gutter cleaners.

Want work that doesn’t depend on a lead site?

A Bark lead goes to you and up to 4 others. In our view that’s a different call from a customer who finds your Google profile and rings you direct. That’s what local SEO for trades works on. If you need calls sooner, you can choose your searches and towns with Google Ads for tradesmen. For every other route, here’s how to get more work as a tradesman in the UK.
